Create a Code Structure
Code structures can be a simple code list or a hierarchy of codes. You can also import the code structure data from an Excel file. This is often a faster way to create a code structure. See Import a Code Structure.
- Select in the Navigation Menu. The Manage Codes tab window displays. The bottom pane displays a list of the available user defined code structures, Boolean fields, and date fields.
- Click in the Ribbon Menu.
- Enter a and .
- Optional. If you are setting up a new global code structure projects can share, check the box.
- Select from the dropdown.
- Select from the dropdown.
- Click in the Ribbon Menu. The new code structure is added to the list in the bottom pane.
- Select the new code structure row in the bottom pane.
- Click in the Ribbon Menu. The Add Code window displays.
- Select the top level in the structure. This top level is the Name of the code file.
- Click .

Enter a and , then click .
Tip:
When a user defined code or field has been added to the code file, select the code or enter the field text before you click Save.
- Repeat Steps 9 through 11 to add the remaining codes and click .
- Optional. Close the Manage Codes tab.
- Select in the Navigation Menu. The Manage Codes tab window displays. The bottom pane displays a list of the available user defined code structures, Boolean fields, and date fields.
- Click in the Ribbon Menu.
- Enter a and .
- Optional. If you are setting up a new global code structure projects can share, check the box.
- Select from the dropdown.
- Select from the dropdown.
- Click in the Ribbon Menu. The new code structure is added to the list in the bottom pane.
- Select the new code structure row in the bottom pane.
- Click in the Ribbon Menu. The Add Code window displays.
- Select the top level in the structure. This top level is the Name of the code file.
- Click .
- The is auto populated with the number 1. Enter a and click . Typically there is a single level 1 code.
- Select the level 1 code and click .

The is auto populated with the parent code, period, and number for next level. Enter a and click .
Tips:
You can overwrite the auto populated number (but not the parent code). The number or text you enter for the code becomes the parent code for any child codes.
When a user defined code or field has been added to the code file, select the code or enter the field text before you click Save.

Continue selecting the parent level code and adding child codes to build out the structure. Click .
Tip:
There are a number of options in the Add Code window Ribbon Menu useful for navigating the structure (Expand, Collapse) and moving codes (Move Up, Move Down, Move Out, Move In, Relocate). When you move codes, the codes are automatically updated to reflect a change in level or parent.

Tip:
There are a number of options in the Add Code window Ribbon Menu useful for navigating the structure (Expand, Collapse) and moving codes (Move Up, Move Down, Move Out, Move In, Relocate). When you move codes, the codes are automatically updated to reflect a change in level or parent. These automatic updates may result in undesirable codes. As an alternative, you can export the code structure, modify the codes in Excel, and then import the data replacing content as desired.
